Fourth Assignment - Save This/That

For our fourth assignment, we were supposed to design a poster with the objective of informing people about saving something. I designed this poster to save young pedestrians inspired from the TV ad where it shows people of various demographics first telling the camera their name and age before saying the tag-line "Watch out for me".

For this assignment, I wanted to appeal to the soft side of Singaporeans. Hence, I took a picture of a teddy bear looking forlornly out from a window of a house. I hope to evoke a sense of sadness and hearthache from the teddy's look and from the caption that he's waiting for his owner to come home. The background of the picture was also changed to grayscale, so that the teddy would be emphasized from the colours. It was also done to draw emphasis onto the teddy bear.

I placed the caption on the left side of the poster to balance the picture, because the teddy bear is on the right. I also placed the some information at the bottom of the poster with the more important tagline in a bigger font. Even if the audience were walking past, he/she would be able to at least catch the tagline at the bottom. The copy was also centralized, to balance the top and the bottom. Also, if it were aligned left or right, it would make the entire poster unbalanced.

This poster is suitable for most sizes, as it is image heavy instead of text-based. The image is also eye-catching from far.

Comments from the class were that the caption at the top might not be visible enough, so I increased the radius of the outer glow, to allow it to stand out better from the background. Another classmate liked that the copy was concise and didn't look too heavy on the eyes.

From this assignment, I learnt more about the placement of items in a poster to keep the balance and harmony of the overall poster. Looking at fellow classmates' work also helped us understand where we should improve on, and how some principles of design do not necessarily apply for all types of posters.
